3 Reasons to Check Out Helm Bar Sydney
Located at Darling Harbour next to the Sydney Aquarium, Helm Bar has been a Sydney landmark since opening in 2002. The relaxed and spacious venue situated above two retail stores offers a casual environment to enjoy a drink, light meal and basque in water views. Helm Bar has recently had a refresh which included updated restrooms, a new bar and modern simplistic dining area featuring pops of greenery and timber furnishings. Here are three damn good reasons you need to check it out:
Along with the revamp came a new all-day dining menu which is superb! The menu features an abundance of share plates, mains, and traditional pub style meals like chicken schnitty or steak. Visiting the venue with my good friend Sydney Chic, we decided to share some dishes and went with the:
Sliced House Smoked Salmon – a great little starter served with lemon, capers, dill and toast. The Salmon was incredibly fresh and tasty, and the portion size was quite large and could easily be shared with up to four people.
Beef Carpaccio – another great way to start a meal. The beef was sliced incredibly thin and when eaten with the watercress and parmesan the flavours just danced on the tongue.
Prosciutto with melon – this dish took me back to Italy. If featured quality shaved prosciutto with pieces of thinly sliced melon. This dish had the perfect balance of sweet and savory.
Blue Swimmer Crab Linguine – This dish was fabulous. It has a delicate balance of flavours highlighting the crab as the hero. I like a bit of spice and found this dish to lack the chilli hit I was expecting, but I would assume this was deliberate not to overpower the delicate crab.
Grilled Fish of the Day – We had salmon with beautifully crisp skin. The fish itself was a generous size and presented nicely on a bed of crushed potatoes and fennel.
Overall, the food was of exceptional quality at a great price considering the quality of ingredients. These five dishes were more than enough for us and a great menu selection – there’s something for every taste.
Also an important factor for me. A good size list with a few wineries I love including Audrey Wilkinson, Cloudy Bay, and Cape Mentelle. Again, the wine list pricing is also very reasonable when considering the quality of wines. Tip: don’t order a bottle, treat yourself to different styles throughout the evening. The team also had excellent wine knowledge and can tell you what pairs well with your chosen dishes.
Featuring harbor views, the venue is the ideal spot to catch up with friends for after work drinks, a casual weekend lunch or a chilled dinner. What’s great about this venue is it’s semi-outdoor space which makes it ideal for spring and summer. We dined in the evening and got to enjoy the sun setting over Pyrmont - it’s a view few Sydney bars offer.
