Do Dinner and a Bash in Dubai
Dune bashing, camel rides and dinner under the stars, this Dubai desert experience may be at the top of your bucket list, but don’t expect the glitz and glamour of the Real Housewives franchise. Last year I spent some time in Dubai on my way home from my European adventure. Having only transited in Dubai, this destination dedicated to luxury and opulence seemed right up my alley. After living through the 2016 seasons of the Real Housewives of Melbourne and Beverly Hills, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into some high-end designer shopping and enjoy an authentic Arabian adventure in the desert. With this experience being at the top of my bucket list, I hopped onto Viator and booked my Desert Safari well in advance.
On the day of the tour my travelling companions and I were picked up from our hotel in a four-wheel drive and whisked out of the city (approx. 45 minutes outside of the city to be exact). When you see footage of the desert in Dubai, it looks so secluded with sand as far as the eye can see. Well, this is a slight misinterpretation, you drive right off the freeway and into, well sand of course. Here we met with at least ten more vehicles which were part of our tour, and it was time for some dune bashing. I have to admit I never actually gave this experience much though until our driver began deflating the vehicle's tyres and from here a million thoughts ran through my mind, are we going to roll and will I survive to tell the tale?
Once we started the adrenaline kicked and I couldn’t get enough. While I’m not an off-road driver, something is exhilarating about driving super-fast up sand dunes and swerving down them on the other side. We were fortunate enough to be in the leading vehicle and had a perfect view of the cars behind us following in our tracks.
Following the dinner, we were entertained by a belly dancer who performed multiple acts including a performance with a sword and a live ‘tanoura’ whirling show. The downtime at the dessert was relaxing and quite an authentic cultural experience when compared to the huge malls, towering skyscrapers and palace hotels built on reclaimed land. While initially, this wasn’t the cultural and luxurious experience I had imagined, it was none the less exciting and unlike anything I had done before. Much like a visit to Central Park in New York or a spot of shopping at Harrods in London, the 4x4 Dubai Desert Safari is a must in this rich city.
4x4 Dubai Desert Safari USD $65 (approx. $88 AUD) per person. Tour duration 6 hours and includes pickup and drop off, comfortable air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles, dune bashing, henna, buffet dinner, camel ride and dune surfing. To book this experience visit Viator.
