Review: Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 3
Bluetooth speakers come in all shapes and sizes, and of course prices. But if you’re under the impression you need to spend big bucks for a product which delivers a powerful audio experience, looks chic and features hours of portable playtime, you haven’t met the Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 3.
Founded in 1953, Harman/Kardon have been manufacturing home and car audio equipment for the last 63 years. Luxury high-end vehicles such as Mercedez Benz and BMW are among the manufacturers featuring the brands premium audio equipment. My first encounter with Harman/Kardon was about ten years ago when I purchased the award-winning SoundSticks 2.1-channel multimedia sound system. At the time I wasn’t familiar with the brand but was drawn to the SoundSticks futuristic design and superior quality sound. Back then $300 was a significant investment, but ten years on these speakers are in perfect condition and deliver crisp audio identical to when I first bought them – money well spent I say!
I was recently on the hunt for a new Bluetooth speaker to keep in my office and was doing my research when I discovered the Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 3. When it comes to purchasing any audio equipment especially portable speakers, I want something that looks stylish, is compact and provides sound quality you would expect from a big speaker. That’s exactly what I got with the Onyx Studio 3. This powerful device delivers exceptional surround sound, unlike anything I have heard within this devices price range. The sound is crisp and the bass thumps without distortion or that annoying tinny sound you get from inferior products. Once again I’ve been drawn in by the sleek looking design of Harman/Kardon products. It features a stylish black fabric finish with leather accents on the back. Its controls sit flush at the top of the speaker and are invisible to the eye when the device is positioned on a flat surface such as a table. The Onyx Studio 3’s modern design means it will complement the décor of your home or office for those of us who expect the practicality and style of a designer product.
Apart from the extraordinary sound quality and its incredibly good looks, the Onyx Studio 3 has the capability to connect up to three smart devices at the same time. It’s also equipped with a built-in microphone Conferencing System. These two features when combined come in incredibly handy when I’m streaming music from my laptop and I receive an incoming call. I’m able to take the call via the speaker and respond while I continue to work. Once I’m done my music starts up again, and I don’t need to worry about switching devices. The Onyx Studio 3 is also features Harman’s proprietary noise and echo-cancelling technology meaning you can be heard crystal-clear each time you take a call. It’s also portable and offers up to 5 hours of playtime which is impressive for a device with this sound quality and price. Another cool feature is that you can wirelessly connect an additional Harman/Kardon Wireless Dual Sound-enabled speaker to heighten your music-listening experience.
Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 3 RRP AUD $349.95. Available now from selected JB Hi-Fi stores nationally.
